Cellulitis Pictures

No, we're not talking the dimpling of the skin that occurs in women.

Cellulitis is a type of infections that occurs subdermally in the connective tissue, but still causes a great deal of infalmmation and distortion in the upper layers of skin.  Cellutlitis is typically caused by a foreign bacteria entering the body and spreading, causing the irritation typcially associated with the infection.  The bacteria can enter the skin in a number of way, even throug small cuts that may not even be visable.

Cellulitis, like almost every other type of infection, should be taken seriously.  In most cases, the bacteria can spread to other parts of the body, causing severe complications, potentially culminating in death.  Since cellutlitis is also classified as a spreading infection, meaning the bacteria tend to spread quickly through the body, it should be taken seriously if you begin to develop signs of infection.

Severe cellulitis on the ankle.

Cellutlis is most common in the lower body especially in the legs, as shown in this picture of cellulitis in the leg.  While it is most common there, it can occur at any part of the body, including the arms, chest and eyes.  After the initial infection, it can spread to other parts of the body in the blood stream, which can make treatment more difficult.
Cellulitis tends to start as a small red area, and quickly expands into a large red mass.  Typcially, cellulitis swells the infected area, which then becomes hot to the touch.  From there, after the initial swelling, the infection tends to move along with the flow of blood, following whichever body part it has infected to the torso or chest area, where it can become very dangerous.  Fever and chills can also be associated with the infection.

An area of severe cellulitis that has entered through a wound.

You may not always see it, but cellulitis does have to have a way to enter the body.  It can either be visible, like a bug bite, boil, abcess, cut scrape, or crack in the skin, or by a wound so small you can't even see it. This is what causes a lot of confusion for people, since some will simply develop a large red, swollen area on an extremity, without any sign of damage to the dermis.
Even if the infection does not look bad, you should be examined by a doctor if you begin to display signs of cellulitis.  Since the infection can spread rapidly, quick action is needed to treat it.  Most cellulitis infections, since they are bacterial based, are treated with anitbiotics.  Even minor infections, however, may require hospitalization, depending on how quickly it starts to spread.

A severe case of cellulitis with MRSA.

Cellulitis has also become known with the MRSA superbug.  This type of infection is known to be resistant to many types of commonly used antibiotics, and has become a serious issues in many hospitals.  MRSA is still treatable with the use of certain kinds of anitbiotics, but the response time is longer, making it a more serious infection.  Cellulitis can be caused by the Staphylococcus bacteria, which also caused MRSA.
Optical cellulitis is a serious infection that starts in the connective tissue around the eyes, as shown in this picture.  Any infection located this close to the brain should be taken seriously, and treated immediately.  You should not try to treat cellulitis on your own, and you should seek medical attention immediately if you think you are developing the infection.

A child with a mild case of optical cellulitis.

Optical cellulitis in children is also fairly common. Do to their immune system not being fully developed, they tend to have a harder time with bacterial infections, like the one shown in this cellulitis picture.  While their immune system will gain a tolerance over time, in the early ages of development, parents should watch for the various signs of infection.

I bought a new pair of Nikes and wore them for the first time with clean socks. At the end of the day my feet were on fire and itching in the pattern of the shoes and not the socks. Went to dr and got cream for the itch, went the next week and got prednisone. By the next week the itch was gone but got horrible cellulitis in my left foot. On my 2nd antibiotic and can still barely walk on the foot. The pain is tough. All this from innocently buying a pair of shoes.

I contracted cellulitis the day after total knee replacement. My mom and husband noticed that my leg looked different than the other one when I had it done in November. On the second day with the bandages off, they were adament about getting a doctor to look at me. I was diagnosed and moved to my own room. I was put on Keflex for two days and then switched to Clindamyicin for 15 more intraveneosly then 10 days orally. When the infection was still not gone I was put on levaquin for 10 more days. This was horrible, I had an adverse reaction to the levaquin and landed up in the hospital. I finished the treatment using anti-diarreha and anti-nausa medication and feeling over all really sick. I have been off of the anti-biotics for 10 days now and the infection has started to show it's ugly face. I am really bummed by this. In addition, I think that it may have spread to lips as they are swollen and red too now.

My brain has been fuzzy, my word recall ability was challenged, and I can't stay awake all day. I get car sick when I ride in the car and have just started driving myself as all of my help has had to go back to their lives. I don't go far, just to physical therapy and to town for food and mail. It is important to Remeber when one part of our body has an infection it affects the whole body. Our brains do not work right and it is important to know that and to make appropriate decisions.

My doctor is treating me for lymphodema, but my health-food-store guru determined my swollen, red feet, ankles, and calves to be cellulitis. It feels like my feet are ON FIRE. It's been 34 days now. My guru advised me to take Butcher's Broom capsules. I just started them and will post the results.

I have cellulitus in my foot via a surgical procedure. The doctors who did the podiatric procedure just missed the problem. I ended up in ER with my foot swollen and red looking like it was about to start rotting off. Two weeks of antibiotics and 6 weeks since a simple procedure and my foot still leaks and hurts.

My four year old has cellulitis at the injection site of her vacination. Her sister also had the same thing happen twice when she was receiving her shots. The sister in between these two did not have this issue. I was told the site was dirty. It was not, as they were freshly showered and I watched the alcohol swab before the injection. The lab work is crazy. I am confused as to wether or not to continue with her other shots.

I have what they believe is cellulitis right now in my upper lip. I look like one of those Avatar characters or Angelina Jolie's offspring! It is incredibly painful (for which LorTab was prescribed) and the doctor is very concerned with how quickly the swelling has spread. This started as what looked like a small zit halfway between my nose and my upper lip, and within 12 hours, had swollen (from under my nose including my lip) to approximately 5-6 times it's normal size.

I was given an injection of antibiotics, a scrip for oral antibiotics, and "just in case it's a cold sore" (rolling my eyes), Zovirax. I also have to go back in the morning if the redness has spread (it has) for another injection of antibiotic, and if it doesn't turn it around and start healing, the doctor said there is a possibility of needing IV antibiotics.

This is NOT stuff to mess around with. If you suspect you may have cellulitis, get to a doctor immediately and get it treated.

I had Cellulitis at the back of my eye. I went to 4 hospitals and they all misdiagnosed the problem as conjunctivitis. The 5th hospital correctly diagnosed the problem as Orbital Cellulitis which can lead to blindness and even death.

I set up a website with the photos:

Alan, I can relate and empathisize with your pain and suffering with a bout of cellulitis. I, too, suffered horribly with a severe case of it. Mine was in February 2008 and it is believe that it came about after being in the hospital (unrelated admission) and having an IV inserted into my hand. It was approximately a week after that admission that I became sick with what I thought was the flu, but then the severe pain in my hand and arm began and I made a trip to the ER, where I was immediately admitted and placed on three different IV antibiotics. My fever did not go as high as yours, but was still significant (103.6 up to 104.2) The pain was absolutely HORRIBLE - nothing would help. Even the doctors that treated me did not fully understand what was happening - I even had one doctor tell me that he had NEVER in all his years of practice seen anything like what my hand and arm looked like. A couple of doctors repeatedly asked me if I had burned myself because my hand looked similar to someone who had suffered third and fourth degree burns. I endured test after test, HORRIFIC hours of physical and occupational therapy that included whirlpool therapy (which, of course, induced almost unbearable pain). And of course, the unavoidable side effects of all those antibiotics (uncontrollable diarrhea and nausea/vomiting). I was finally released after over a week in the hospital, but had a visting nurse coming to the house twice a week to assess my progress and every other day trips to physical/occupational therapy to regain the proper use of my hand. Fortunately, I made a full recovery, with the slight exception that the skin on my affected hand has that look of a healed burn (wrinkled and not all one skin tone). I was definitely very lucky - was told after the fact that I could very well have died from this infection. Very scary, especially when you hear that the infection came about because of something that was actually done in a hospital setting.

Hi there, my four year old son fell & sprained his ankle, due to the redness & swelling it was determined he needed blood work for a possible infection. Blood work was done,we seen doctor after doctor, MRI done, seen more doctors, is ankle progressively got better however they insist that he has cellulitis due to slightly elevated levels of reactive protein were 4.3,where normal is 0.3 & can be in the 80's. He has had no fever what so ever,it has been 5 days & the redness & swelling are almost gone, with only some bruising remaining. I have not given him the antibiotics that they have prescribed & I am leery as to if I should? I want to take him to a different hospital & have is blood levels checked again & a second opinion. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,Misty
Yes this is scary!

revised by adding a sentence is underlined, I submitted this experience a few minutes ago.

I had Cellulitis Dec 2008 in my legs, and by the time I realized what was happening, it felt like the flesh in my legs was filled with thousands of pieces of ground up glass. Walking was horrible, and as a 350 lb man dying of Multiple Sclerosis I had the worst time walking down the stairs to the waiting ambulance, where other rescue squads in Denver were prepared to handle a patient my size, this one wasn't. I don't overeat, or eat anything really, but when you go from being a svelt exercise machine to bed bound, every crumb of food I put in my body is turned to fat, I eat less than 400 calories a day in the form of a yogurt cup, or FiberOne cereal, and a fish oil capsule serving because I have severe hypoglycemia and low blood pressure. The pain was so unbearable my neighbors heard me screaming for hours, by the time I entered the ER I was almost immediately connected to a pain pump I could push when I needed more pain controlling narcotic. I will remember the pain more than anything. One day everything seemed normal, and in the course of one day flu like symptoms quickly escalated and worsened, until what seemed like "in the blink of an eye," I was regretting not filling out my living will. They said I almost died, when I got to the hospital I had such high fever of 107 I was hallucinating and suffering in spite of high dose dilaudid, methadone, and valium brought no relief whatsoever. I had to have bags of IV antibiotics changed 5 times a day, in addition to oral antibiotics, I was in the hospital 6 days, and endured much tests, pain, etc. Tests revealed two organisms which infected my blood as well, but they kept avoiding to answer my questions about that, I still don't know much about the blood infection, they kept asking me about my cat, he sometimes breaks my skin when walking on me. I do not have any other transmitted diseases. Everything I find to read about this disease just fails in my opinion to help me understand it any better. This is scary stuff.
